New Year, New Tennis Goals, Routines and Gear

Ah, it's that time of year again when we’re thinking about resolutions. For tennis enthusiasts everywhere, it’s the perfect time to look back on their journey, assess their previous achievements (or misses), and set a whole lot of fresh goals for the coming year. Whether you want to play pro on the ATP tour, dominate at the club level, or simply get to the courts more, now is the time to set those goals.

To help you start off on the right foot, we created this guide to help you set your intentions, including helpful tips to stay motivated and disciplined, such as refreshing your routine, practice, perspective, and, last but not least, your gear.

With that in mind, let's dive in!

Set Fresh Goals

When you’re thinking about goal setting, look back at your wins and losses to figure out where you want to focus. Does your serve need work? Your footwork? Are you recovering with intent or making clean contact with the ball? Be honest with yourself to pinpoint specific and measurable short term goals that will help you meet your long term goals, such as meeting a ranking goal or finally beating your club rival. It also helps to find a coach, mentor, or tennis partner who can hold you accountable. They can also help you revisit and assess your goals as needed.

Refresh your Routine

Now that you have your short and long term goals ready to go, let’s look at how you can refresh your training routine so it doesn’t feel so monotonous.

Here are a few simple ways to do so:

  • Focus on your warm-up: If you’re not already warming up before your training session or match, it's a good idea to do so. There are many benefits to adding dynamic stretches, such as preventing injuries and preparing your muscles for the physical demands of tennis. You can also switch up which dynamic stretches you practice so you don’t fall into a rut with your warm-up.
  • Take time for cool-downs: Just like warm ups recovery can be overlooked, but incorporating a post-match stretch helps remove lactic acid from your muscles. You can always pack a foam roller or massage gun in the main compartment of your tennis bag or if you really want to make things interesting, you can take an ice bath!
  • Use Targeted Drills: Make sure to focus on drills that have intention behind them and are working towards the goals that you have set. Practicing with a purpose is a great way to stay motivated and remind yourself of the skills you’re building.
  • Don’t Ignore Mental Preparation: Tennis is as much of a mental game as physical. Take care to check in with yourself if you’re getting easily frustrated. Visualization and meditation techniques can help reduce burnout and increase mental toughness.
  • Schedule Rest Days: Tennis is an intense sport full of explosive movement, so give your body some R&R. Schedule “off days” or less intense days to give your muscles and joints time to rest.
  • Listen to Your Body: Adjust your training as needed to reduce the risk of significant injuries. Too much of anything, even exercise, can be bad for you. Of course, consult a qualified physician for more information if you begin to notice any persistent pain or discomfort.

Invest in High-Quality Gear

Armed with ways to refresh your routine, it's time to review your accessories and equipment. While you might be considering a new racquet or tennis shoes, don’t forget about a key accessory like your tennis racquet bag

We designed The Rocket for the tennis player who doesn’t want to sacrifice style for function. Here are a few of our favorite features:

  • The Rocket’s all-black color scheme features tennis ball yellow accents to fit any style.
  • Innovative features like the Rocket Pocket and smart pocket system make it easy to find your gear quickly.
  • There are pockets for all your essentials – racquets, tennis balls, a shoe compartment, antimicrobial lined wet pocket, outer water bottle pocket, utility pockets for smaller items like grip tape, and more.
  • When you open the main compartment, there is plenty of space for a larger item like a massage gun or foam roller.
  • The Rocket’s hideable backpack straps and removable shoulder strap also give you the option to carry the bag like a backpack, duffel, or tote bag.

When it's time to shop for new gear, club players may want to consider the following: smart design, comfort, durable material, travel-friendly features, and a price point that reflects quality.

Practice a Positive Mindset

Last but not least, remember to go in with a positive mindset to help keep your head in the game. Here are a few tips to keep you motivated and disciplined:

  • Embrace Challenges: You will inevitably be down love-40 on your serve. Rather than viewing this case as a failure, view it as an opportunity to assess and correct. When you view challenges as opportunities, you will be better equipped to handle the pressure and analyze and correct what isn't working rather than dwelling on errors and missed opportunities.
  • Utilize Visualization and Mindfulness: Just like in yoga, these mental techniques can help you get the most out of your practice session or match. When you ground yourself in the moment and visualize your desired outcome, you’re more likely to stay consistent and improve your in-game decision-making skills.
  • Self-Compassion: People may confuse mental toughness for being hard on yourself, but it actually starts with having self-compassion. When you can forgive yourself for missing a few easy balls, you’re more likely to maintain the mental clarity and discipline needed to finish strong.
